AHAVA Mineral Hand Cream Review

Winter is a beautiful season full of holidays, glitter, snowflakes, dark color palettes and of course moisture getting pulled out of every square inch of your skin. What a lovely time. One survival tool needed to make it through until we’re sweating out of those very same square inches of skin is hydrating products.

Finding a good hand cream for winter is about the equivalent to finding out that your neighbor shoveled the block for everyone – endless grateful. The AHAVA mineral hand cream got me through the first stretch of winter and now I’m desperate to find a replacement for the second, much harsher, half.

This hand cream’s featured ingredient is the Mineral Spring Water from the dead sea and is said to contain beneficial minerals to replenish skin. However, as you know from my moisturizing ingredients post (read here) your skin is going to require the assistance of a humectant, emollient or occlusive to add some hydration. Looking at the rest of the ingredient list on this hand cream you’ll see a good base of emollients and humectants. However, the star ingredient of this formula is Ethylhexyl Palmitate.

I love this hand cream because a little goes a long way and it’s effective at keeping my hand hydrated for multiple hours. But – hands down (ha get it) my favorite part is the cream to oil feel of the product. Working a small bit through my hands slowly shifts the texture from a medium weight cream to a smooth and aqueous lotion. The ingredient Ethylhexyl Palmitate is responsible for this texture shift.

Ethylhexyl Palmitate is a palm oil lipid derivative and is a common replacement for silicone. This ingredient acts as a skin smoothing ester and is used in many skin care products to adjust the consistency. So if you see me at the store I’m probably searching ingredient lists for this star ingredient.
