Polished Professionals: Rachel from The Blonde Biologist

After a bit of a blog hiatus, I am THRILLED to be featuring another amazing scientist for #PolishedProfessionals. Today I am featuring my blog and Instagram friend Rachel from the Blonde Biologist! I reached out to Rachel before my trip to Hawaii for recommendations and we’ve remained aggressively supportive Insta friends every since – even publishing a joint blog post on coral reef safe sunscreens. Read our interview below to see what this blonde biologist is all about.

Elevator Pitch

I am a former environmental scientist currently living the expat life in England. I use my social media platform to educate on environmental awareness and break stereotypes of what a scientist looks like.

For you, does beauty play a role in being a scientist?

Absolutely! I express myself through beauty and fashion, and this applies to my professional life as well. When I worked for the state government, my role involved a large amount of communication with the public and I felt more confident when I wore makeup and presented myself nicely. And of course, working partially in the field meant sunscreen was an essential beauty product for the job!

Do you have any experience with being treated differently in your professional life for beauty habits or routines that you participate in?

I am fortunate to have worked with a diverse group of scientists and engineers, and my boss was a relatively feminine woman, so I never experienced any negative treatment regarding my love for beauty and fashion. If anything, it helped spark relationships with others in my office. I bonded with one colleague over perfume and lashes, and one male colleague and I would apply sunscreen before leaving for the day while talking about our favorite reef-safe brands.

If you could formulate one product what would it be?

Without a doubt, it would be a hair gel that holds the shape and volume of my curls without looking greasy or frizzy. My hair is my favorite attribute and biggest headache! (Rachel has the most amazing head of hair, major hair inspo can be found on her Instagram!)

Desert island beauty product edition! What 3 products would you need to survive?

  1. SPF Moisturizer
  2. Lip Balm
  3. Conditioner

Having moved from extremely different climates (Indiana –>Hawaii –> England) do you have any tips or advice for transitioning your beauty routine?

Stick to your usual beauty routine and keep an eye on any changes. It’s easier to adjust from there! In Hawaii, I needed more deep conditioning treatments for my hair and obviously sunscreen with a high SPF. My move to England required a lot more moisturizer!
