I’ve written about hair masks before and my love for how smooth and soft they make my hair feel. The Trader Joe’s Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Mask is the pass I’ve had in this product category. $3.99 can get you 5.1 oz of a tropical smelling conditioner. The formula starts melting as soon as I spread it between my hands, which is probably due to water and coconut oil being the highest concentration ingredients. Coconut oil is composed of lots of fatty acids that can penetrate the hair shaft easily making it an effective hair mask. However, after looking at the ingredients this appears to be a fairly standard conditioner with lots of extracts and additives thrown in. Fragrance is higher up on the ingredient list than traditional conditioners which make me believe that they used a coconut scent because coconut oil doesn’t naturally smell like the tropical coconut concoction that’s in this bottle. Overall, I didn’t find anything extraordinarily special about this hair masks, it felt more like a coconut scented conditioner than it did a hydrating hair mask.
