Mally, L’Oreal, Tarte – oh my!

mascara review - Cosmetic Composition

As far as makeup goes, mascara is definitely one of my favorite products to use. Since I keep everything pretty basic in my makeup routine I really like using a mascara that makes a statement. This summer I’ve been rotating between a few lovely mascaras and thought I’d share a quick review on each for everyone! (P.S. You can check out my post about the composition & history of mascara here!)

Mally’s Volumizing Mascara

To be completely frank – I have had a huge love hate relationship with this mascara. I received this Mally volumizing mascara in a past Allure Beauty Box and instantly got off to a bad start with it. The wand is straight and stiff which made it hard to apply and the formula was so wet that I got mascara all over my eyelid and skin during every application. I stopped using the mascara for a few months and pick up again this past Spring. After extreme patience, I mastered using this mascara and found myself loving it. The formula is very wet so watch out for that. Learning how to use a straight wand was a learning curve that I needed to experience since I pretty much only use curved wands. This mascara gives a great everyday eyelash, provides rich black coloring and is very easy to build – which is perfect for a day to night transition.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua Purificata) Purified, Synthetic Beeswax, Paraffin, Stearic Acid, Acacia Senegal Gum, Triethanolamine, Butylene Glycol, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Glyceryl Stearate, Polybutene, Tricontanyl PVP, Phenoxyethanol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Polyquaternium-65, Hydrolyzed Rhodophycea Extract

L’Oreal Lash Paradise Voluminous Mascara

I was very excited when I saw that L’Oreal had a new Voluminous mascara because I’m a huge fan of their original voluminous formula. The L’Oreal Lash Paradise Voluminous Mascara has become a staple in my weekend/going-out look because it gives great volume and has a heavier look in general. I typically like my lashes very coated with a slight thickness and lots of volume and that’s exactly what I get from this product. The wand is very bushy compared to their other Voluminous mascaras but I still found it very easy to apply. The price is great ($9) and the Millennial pink tube is Instagram worthy.

Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara

I was extremely skeptical about using this mascara. The wand is very skinny and has short bristles, the formula is from a company that boasts being vegan and cruelty-free, and I’m not crazy about non-volumizing mascaras. I was totally surprised by Tarte’s Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara – it has become my new daily mascara! This mascara is very lengthening, with a touch of volumizing and is perfect for everyday use. The tiny wand makes the application easy and reduces the number of mascara specks I typically get on my eyelid. One thing I’m not crazy about is the size of the mascara itself or the packaging but that is simply my preference regarding Tarte products.

Comparison

Mally ($20): well-rounded luxury mascara that is great for adding volume and an everyday look

L’Oreal ($9): quality drugstore option that provides buildable volume for a more dramatic appearance

Tarte ($23): luxury everyday mascara that will give a touch of length and volume while being vegan and cruelty-free

I’d love to hear everyone’s favorite mascara below!
